The Smart Prosecution Fund is a public education and civic engagement organization focused on the role of prosecutors and judges in our legal system. We help communities understand what fair, evidence-based, and accountable prosecution and adjudication look like — and what happens when those standards aren't met.

We believe that an informed public is the foundation of a well-functioning legal system. When communities understand what their prosecutors and judges are doing, and why it matters, they are better equipped to hold institutions accountable, participate meaningfully in civic life, and advocate for a legal system that actually delivers on its promise of equal justice under law.

Prosecutors decide which cases to bring and how to resolve them. Judges interpret the law and determine sentences. Together, they shape nearly every dimension of public safety and justice in a community. Yet voter turnout in prosecutorial and judicial elections is routinely among the lowest of any race on the ballot — and public knowledge about these offices is correspondingly thin.

The Smart Prosecution Fund exists to close that gap by making sure they have the information they need to think for themselves — and to hold their legal institutions to the standards they deserve.
